Switzerland

City Info

Switzerland located in central Europe, east of France, north of Italy. The Helvetic Confederation, is an attractive country made up 23 cantons. Many contrasts - even paradoxes - stem from the diversity of its inhabitants, languages and religions. Switzerland's independence and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers and Switzerland was not involved in either of the two World Wars.
The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, may be rendering obsolete the country's concern for neutrality. The country is a small European country known for its beautiful, snow-capped mountains and freedom-loving people. The Alps and the Jura Mountains cover more than half of Switzerland.
But most of the Swiss people live on a plateau that extends across the middle of the country between the two mountain ranges. In this region are most of Switzerland's industries and its richest farmlands. Switzerland's capital, Bern, and largest city, Zurich, are also there.

LUCERNE

An hour south of Basel and Zürich, and boasting invigorating mountain views, lake cruises and a picturesque old quarter, LUZERN (Lucerne in French and English, Lucerna in Italian) has long been one of Europe's most heavily touristed towns. When Queen Victoria came for a long holiday in August 1868 (checking in under a pseudonym), the town was already renowned, and a century of steady growth has resulted these days in five million admirers passing through each year. Tourism is the leading source of income, and yet the city has adeptly managed to retain all of its charm. The River Reuss splits the town, flowing rapidly out of the northwestern end of the lake. River banks on both sides are clustered with medieval squares, frescoed houses, ancient guildhalls, churches and chapels, and filled with a liveliness that belies the city's age. Aside from using Luzern as a base from which to explore the region, it would be easy to spend at least a couple of days taking in some of its quality museums – a Picasso gallery, the impressive Verkehrshaus (Transport Museum) – in between walking on the medieval battlements, and exploring cobbled alleys and hidden garden courtyards. But Luzern is no museum piece; café culture is treasured by the city's large population of young people, and at midnight on a weekend night, the main Pilatusstrasse boulevard has the feel of any European capital, with people bar-hopping, waiting for the last bus, or hanging out deciding where to go. Whether you're charmed by Luzern's sense of history and tradition, or by the misty lake at its doorstep and the snow-capped Pilatus rising above, or even by its nightlife, charmed is what you'll be.

ZURICH

Money does indeed make the world go round, and Zürich is here to prove it. It's a sober, responsible, business-oriented town, but despite rumors to the contrary is not just for the boringly wealthy. It's Switzerland's most populous city and offers plenty of cultural diversions. Chocolate bars will battle gold bars for your attention, the town boasts free bicycle loans, and a varied cycle of festivals keeps the people hopping. Visitors - not all of them wearing neckties - can explore galleries, the pedestrian streets of the old town and Zürich's lakeside setting. Goethe described Switzerland as a combination of 'the colossal and the well-ordered,' and Zürich, like the country's other towns and cities, runs on minute-perfect time. That doesn't mean it's predictable: Its people did, after all, spawn Dadaism, that anti-art art movement, which goes to show that even cities bubbling over with affluence hold some unexpected surprises.
